Frequently asked questions

What is a Refill store?

A refill store focuses on reducing waste by offering customers the ability to refill their own containers from bulk products instead of purchasing new containers every time they need to restock. Gaia’s refill station stocks eco-friendly products including laundry detergent, dish soap, white vinegar, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, Epsom salts, toothpaste tablets and more. You can buy a small amount to try out a new product or fill up a large jar of an all-natural product you use frequently. Bulk shopping at a refill store for the first time can be intimidating, please know we are here to answer every question and help along the way!

What does low-waste mean?

Low waste is a more widely attainable version of zero waste. A low waste store focuses on reducing waste production with eco-friendly products that are reusable, compostable and plastic-free. Simply put, it means you’ll have less to throw away and add less to landfills.

What does it mean to live sustainably and why is it important?

Living sustainably means making choices that have a positive impact on the environment and our world. It involves living in a way that meets our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. There are many reasons why it’s important to live sustainably.

  1. Our planet is facing significant environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution and deforestation which threaten the well-being of all living things. By living sustainably, we can reduce our carbon footprint and minimize the negative impact we have on the environment.

  2. Living sustainably can lead to healthier lifestyles and longevity. Choosing to eat plant-based (even occasionally), reducing waste and using natural and non-toxic products can have a positive impact on our everyday health and well-being.

  3. By supporting local businesses and choosing environmentally-friendly products and practices, we can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable economy.

At Gaia's Market & Refillery, we believe that living sustainably is essential for a better future for ourselves and future generations. That's why we're committed to providing our customers with sustainable and eco-friendly products and resources.

How Can I get better at recycling?

Visit our Recycling Resource page for recycling guidelines and links to local recycling collection sites, including what items we can accept at Gaia’s.

is the soap you carry antibacterial?

The short answer is yes! The ingredients in commercial soaps that make them antibacterial is not great for our skin. At Gaia’s we stock a few different soaps at the refill station and soap bars in the market that are naturally antibacterial from essential oils — lavender, cedar and citrus are all natural antibacterials. Overuse of the more commercial antibacterial agents can do more harm than good by reducing the healthy bacteria on skin and removing natural oils to dry out skin. Tricolsen, the main chemical in these, pollutes our water and has been banned by the FDA in certain products.

Does Gaia’s collect compost?

Yes! We have partnered with Glad Earth Compost, a residential service working to make it easy for everyone to compost even if you don’t have the time or space. To get started, come in to Gaia’s and let us know you’d like to join the composting club. It costs $15 the first time (you can pay cash or Venmo) and you receive a composting bucket and list of what is accepted. You’ll take your compost bucket home and fill it up as much as you can. Then you’ll bring it back to Gaia’s and swap it for a new composting bucket for $7 and we’ll take care of the rest. Composting is a great way to start living more sustainably by reducing emissions that contribute to climate change, increase soil health, conserve water and divert waste from landfills.
